~What is Stick Curtain Walling?~

Curtain walling is a form of vertical building enclosure which supports no load other than its own weight, that of ancillary components and the environmental forces that act upon it.

The general arrangement of a stick curtain walling system is shown in Figure 1. Horizontal and vertical framing members (‘sticks’) are normally extruded aluminium protected by anodizing or powder coating. Members are cut to length and machined in the factory prior to assembly on site as a kit of parts. Into the framework are fitted infill units, which may comprise a mixture of fixed and open glazing and insulated panels.

~Design Performance~
McMullen Architectural Systems in house curtain walling system, MAS F50, utilises a variety of interchangeable standard components for customer applications. It is a mullion drained system and the versatility of the MAS F50 series is demonstrated on both high rise buildings and various low rise facades. Additional features listed below can be easily incorporated into the design.

The MAS F50 curtain walling system was subjected to full testing as laid down by the CWCT, this included a full dynamic test. The following performance levels were met:

  • Air Permeability – Tested to 600Pa under CWCT section 4 (BS5368 Part 1 / BS6375 Part 1)
  • Static Water Tightness – Tested to 600Pa under CWCT section 5 (BS 5368 Part 2 / BS6375 Part 1)
  • Dynamic Water Tightness – Tested to 600Pa equivalent under CWCT section 6 (AAMA 501.1)
